How to Deep Clean
a KitchenThe Right Way
Your kitchen handles everything โ family meals, pet feeding, daily cooking, homework snacks, and all of life’s mess. This professional step-by-step system walks you through every zone, every appliance, and every hidden surface so your reset actually sticks.
This Isn’t Just About Clean Counters.
It’s About a Safer Home.
Texas kitchens accumulate grease, bacteria, and hard water buildup faster than almost any other room โ heavy cooking, outdoor dust, humidity, pets tracking through, and kids snacking constantly all add up. A deep clean isn’t a chore. It’s a full reset that changes how the entire home feels.
Remove Bacteria
Kitchen surfaces harbor more bacteria than most bathrooms โ especially sinks, sponges, and handles.
Prevent Pests
Grease and crumbs in hidden zones attract ants and roaches. Deep cleaning eliminates their food source.
Eliminate Odors
Residue in drains, behind appliances, and in the range hood filter are usually the source of lingering smells.
Protect Appliances
Grease buildup makes appliances work harder and shortens their lifespan. Clean appliances run better.
Improve Air Quality
A clogged range hood filter recirculates grease vapor into your home air with every cooking session.
Safer for Pets
Pets walk on and lick kitchen floors. Residue from cleaning products, food particles, and bacteria affect them too.

10 Steps to a Deep Clean Kitchen
โ In the Right Order
Order matters. Professional cleaners always work top-to-bottom, high-to-low, and save floors for last. Follow this sequence to avoid re-cleaning anything twice.
Declutter Everything First
The step most people skip โ and why everything takes longer because of it
Cleaning around clutter is impossible. Every item left on the counter creates a zone you’ll either miss or have to go back to. Before a single spray bottle comes out, everything needs to come off the counters and out of your workspace.
Remove from all surfaces:
- โAll dishes, glasses, and cookware
- โFood items, produce, and pantry overflow
- โBottles, oils, spice racks
- โDish towels, sponges, drying racks
- โSmall appliances (toaster, coffee maker, etc.)
- โPet food bowls and feeding mats
- โAnything on top of the refrigerator
Deep Clean the Sink Area
The dirtiest surface in most kitchens โ dirtier than your toilet
The kitchen sink harbors more bacteria than almost any other surface in your home. In pet households where you wash bowls, it’s even more contaminated. A proper sink deep clean goes well beyond the basin.
- Fill sink with hot water + a generous squeeze of dish soap โ let soak 5 minutes
- Scrub basin walls and bottom with a sponge or stiff brush
- Apply baking soda paste to stubborn stains, let sit 5 min, scrub, rinse
- Scrub drain cover and flush drain with baking soda + vinegar + hot water
- Disinfect faucet handles separately โ these are the most-touched surfaces
- Clean the faucet base and the area under and behind the faucet
- Polish the faucet with a dry microfiber cloth to remove water spots
- Freshen garbage disposal: drop in lemon slices + coarse salt, run cold water
Deep Clean Countertops
Surface-specific care that prevents permanent damage
Different countertop materials require completely different products. Using the wrong cleaner on stone can cause irreversible etching. Knowing your surface type before you spray anything is step one.
๐ชจ Granite & Natural Stone
- โUse only stone-safe, pH-neutral cleaner
- โNever use vinegar, bleach, or citrus
- โWipe dry immediately after cleaning
๐ซ Butcher Block & Wood
- โWarm water + dish soap only
- โNever soak or leave wet
- โOil with food-safe mineral oil monthly
๐ฒ Laminate
- โMild all-purpose cleaner
- โAvoid harsh abrasives or steel wool
- โDry promptly to prevent seam lifting
โจ All Surfaces
- โLet cleaner sit 30 sec before wiping
- โClean corners, edges, and under-lip areas
- โDisinfect high-touch zones last
Scrub the Stove & Oven
Where most Texas kitchen grease lives โ and hides
This is the most labor-intensive step โ and the one with the biggest payoff. Texas kitchens with regular frying, sautรฉing, and BBQ prep accumulate grease faster than almost anywhere else. Pre-soaking is essential. Never start scrubbing without it.
๐ต Gas Stove
- Remove grates and burner caps
- Soak in hot water + degreaser, 20โ30 min
- Scrub with stiff brush, rinse, dry
- Wipe around each burner port with a damp cloth
- Clean stove surface with degreaser spray
โก Electric & Glass Stove
- Remove drip pans or lift elements
- Soak drip pans in hot soapy water
- For glass: apply vinegar + baking soda paste, wait 10 min
- Scrub gently with non-abrasive pad
- Use razor scraper for baked-on spots (glass only)
Oven Deep Clean:
- Remove racks โ soak in tub with hot water + dish soap
- Apply oven cleaner or baking soda paste to interior walls โ avoid heating elements
- Let sit 20โ30 minutes (longer for heavy buildup)
- Scrub walls with a non-abrasive pad, wipe with damp cloth
- Clean oven door glass on both sides โ use a razor scraper for baked-on residue
- Scrub and dry racks before replacing
Clean the Microwave
Splatter, odor, and burnt residue โ gone in 10 minutes
Microwaves collect food splatters, odors, and burnt residue that make the entire kitchen smell stale. The steam method requires zero scrubbing effort.
- Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup water + sliced lemon (or 2 tbsp vinegar)
- Microwave on high for 3 minutes โ steam saturates the interior
- Let stand with door closed for 2 minutes โ steam continues working
- Wipe interior walls, ceiling, and floor with a damp cloth โ residue lifts effortlessly
- Remove and wash turntable plate in warm soapy water
- Wipe exterior, buttons, and handle โ these collect grease from handling
Wipe Cabinets & Drawers
Grease travels farther than you think โ especially near the stove
Grease vapor settles on every cabinet surface within cooking range, then traps dust and becomes a sticky, hardening film. Cabinet fronts near the stove are usually the dirtiest surfaces in the kitchen โ they just don’t show it until it’s bad.
- โWipe all cabinet doors โ top priority: cabinets near the stove and range hood
- โScrub handles and pulls โ these are touched hundreds of times per week
- โClean cabinet edges and the underside of upper cabinets (grease deposits here)
- โVacuum drawer interiors with a brush attachment โ crumbs collect in corners
- โWipe drawer fronts and handles inside and out
- โSpot-clean fingerprints, smudges, and sticky residue throughout
Deep Clean the Refrigerator
The big job that transforms how your kitchen smells
Most homeowners wipe refrigerator shelves when a spill happens. A proper deep clean goes further โ removing shelves, cleaning door seals where mold hides, and addressing odors at the source.
- Empty all food โ discard expired items while shelves are out
- Remove all shelves, drawers, and door bins
- Wash removed parts in warm soapy water, rinse, and dry completely before replacing
- Wipe interior walls, ceiling, and floor with a mild all-purpose spray
- Clean door gaskets and seals โ mold hides in the folds; use a damp cloth with mild soap, dry thoroughly
- Wipe exterior surfaces and handles
- If accessible, vacuum refrigerator coils (bottom or back) โ improves efficiency significantly
- Replace food; leave an open box of baking soda for ongoing odor absorption
Clean Small Appliances
Six appliances that collect more than you realize
Small appliances accumulate grease, crumbs, residue, and in some cases mold โ especially in the humid Texas climate. Each one needs a different approach.
Toaster
Unplug, remove crumb tray, shake over trash. Wipe exterior with damp cloth. Never submerge.
Coffee Maker
Run a cycle with equal parts water and vinegar. Follow with 2 plain water cycles. Wipe exterior and carafe.
Blender
Disassemble fully. Clean the gasket at the blade base โ mold lives here. Wash all parts in hot soapy water.
Air Fryer
Remove and soak tray and basket in hot soapy water. Wipe interior chamber. Never submerge the unit itself.
Slow Cooker
Remove and soak insert. Clean the exterior rim where the lid sits โ residue builds here. Wipe base.
Stand Mixer
Wipe body and head with damp cloth. Wash attachments and their storage slots. Clean under the tilt head.
Walls, Backsplash & High-Touch Surfaces
The most-skipped zone in every home kitchen
Cooking splatters travel farther than you think โ the wall behind the stove, the backsplash grout, and the underside of upper cabinets all collect grease silently. Light switches and door handles are touched dozens of times daily, often with greasy or food-residue hands.
- โLight switches and switch plates โ wipe with disinfecting cloth
- โOutlet plates near the countertop
- โDoor handles leading to and from the kitchen
- โBacksplash โ scrub grout lines with a brush and degreaser
- โWall behind and beside the stove โ wipe from bottom up
- โRefrigerator exterior handles
- โTrash can exterior and lid
- โWindowsills and window handles if in the kitchen
Clean the Floors โ Always Last
The step that locks in everything you just did
Floors are always last โ without exception. Every step above this one sends crumbs, dust, and cleaning product residue downward. Mopping before finishing appliances and cabinets means mopping twice. Save floors for the final step, every time.
- Sweep or vacuum the entire floor, including under and around the stove, refrigerator, and cabinets
- Move pet feeding mats and any floor items โ clean underneath them
- Mop with appropriate floor cleaner for your floor type (tile, hardwood, vinyl)
- Pay special attention to grout lines on tile floors near the stove area
- Allow to dry fully before replacing feeding mats, rugs, and floor items
